House approves USMCA legislation
On Dec. 19, 2019, the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R.5430 – the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) Implementation Act. This revision of the long-standing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is a priority for the Administration’s economic agenda. It was passed by a vote of 385 to 41. The bill now must be approved by the Senate. It is expected the Senate will approve it early in 2020 once the impeachment trial is completed.
All three countries must ratify the agreement for the USMCA for it to take effect. Mexico has already ratified the. Agreement. Canada has previously indicated that they expect to take action once the U.S has done so.
Fact sheets on the “new NAFTA” agreement can be found here.
